Sounding the call

NO DOUBT, THE BLAST RIGHT THAT KILLED REP. Wahab Akbar and there others has delivered a message that is too real to disregard.

This is not to divert from the fact that the police have zeroed in on the Abu Sayyaf, the usual suspect, and in fact reported several breaks including the identities and neutralization of two of them.

The irony isnot lost to most Filipinos however, the fact that it is as much an ominous warning to the institution as it is to its individual members who conduct themselves as though they could not care less about public opinion.

Congress has become the object os scorn and discain because of the propensity of its members who belong to the majority block to simply close ranks whenever there are perceived threats to it and then run roughshod on them.

that it has worked leaves little doubt given the continued perch of its most prized object of worship. As to whether the tactic will work all the time is althogether an entirely different thing however.

The attack on Akbar was a first, meaning that it was inconceivable until it happened. Who would actually believe that a congressman could be murdered right in the sacntity of his own home.

That too is worth a minute of reflection for the others. At this time, an impeachment case against the President is inconceivable. Not that it has never been done before.

The impeachment of ex-Pres. Erap Estrada is still fresh in the minds of many people to prove that.

It is just that Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's minions have mastered the art of closing their eyes and ears to all contrary evidence whenever the bugle is sounded on an impeachment case.

And yet, it does not mean that there will be no end to that. After all, all things will eventually pass away. The present Congress should be no exception.

If Congress as a whole cannot rise above its petty partisan considerations, then its individual members should take it upon themselves to do so. In matters of conscience, the majority has no power.

In a sense, Akbar is even more fortunate thatn most of his peers. He was killed practically with his boots on. Although he was no longer able to hear them, paeans were sung in his honor as his loyal followers wept.

Those who remain cannot be too sure they would be sent off with just as much affect and adulation. The situation is too fluid to even consider that.

The call has been sounded. Those who have ears should listen.
