Clear conscience

Former Panglao Mayor Doloreich Dumaluan is giving Boholanos a crash course on how to handle a criminal case. The new twist in the Vivian Dumaluan rape-slay has revealed the true colors of the former mayor.

After being accused of masterminding the gruesome rape-slay of the nanny of his younger brother by his former driver, Dumaluan has gone berserk as if to remind people that he is above the law.

Going on a rampage in a vicious propaganda assault aided in part by sympathetic media people, Dumaluan has verbally abused all those who accused of being responsible for his inclusion in the new charge sheet.

He blames business and political rivals for the new development, conveniently side-stepping the issue on why he should be the object of a vicious campaign after he suffered a devastating defeat in last year's election.

Perhaps believing that he can fool all of the people all of the time, he goes on a barrage of accusations against people in the media who do not report things according to his perspective while disregarding the fact that the reports are based on actual documents.

He has savaged government officials and employees who have refused to be cowed by his acts of intimidation and who have insisted to remain faithful to their lawful duties.

His latest antic however showed his real stuff.

Descending on the house of the victim's grandfather, the former mayor used abusive language in maligning the victim's father and immediate family. Who gave him the right and authority to arrogantly insult the victim's family right in their home betrays the kind of personality that he has.

Dumaluan loves to picture himself as the underdog who has been the victim of the powerful. The picture of him harassing the victim's 79-year-old grandfather certainly belies all such claims.

This is not to say the former mayor is already convicted of the crime for which he was charged. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Can anybody please tell him that no one is immune from suit and that it is a risk that anybody has to face squarely and respectfully?

So many innocent people have faced unfounded accusations and yet they faced their accusers in court with dignity and honor. They calmly yet confidently strode into the hot seat with the assurance of a balm of a clear conscience.

That may be expecting too much from him though.
