DNL urges unity in the
face of rice shortage

Tagbilaran Mayor Dan Lim yesterday called on different sectors in society to close ranks in the face of the impending rice shortage crisis in the country.

Speaking during his weekly radio program over Station DyRD, Lim said the people should disregard whatever differences they have and unite in addressing the crisis that is confronting the nation.

"More than anything, we need peace of mind and heart. In crises such as this, we will be able to prove the power of our God," the mayor said.

Lim said that people who give in to anger and desperation will never be able to face challenges and trials.

He added that everything begins with a clear mind and heart that continues to hope no matter what is ahead and is seen by the eyes.

"Let us unite in bringing to God our prayers and desires in the midst of this challenge that we face. With His blessings, we can hope that a new day will break no matter how dark the night may seem," the mayor added.

He noted that in the face of challenges and problems, people react differently.
"There are those who give vent to their feelings and their anger. While we may understand why people feel this way, this does not mean that this is the way to solve our problems," he added.

The mayor said there are others who resort to finger-pointing, blaming others for the misery that they go through.

"This is an indication of the confusion and the desperation in the face of the crisis," he added.

While the real intention is to shift the blame on others and evade responsibility, the mayor said it also does not help in addressing the problem.

Lim said the third response is to face the problem squarely by looking for solutions on how to solve it.

"Perhaps, we might get carried away by our emotions because of what other people have done to bring us to this situation. But this should not lead us away from the task of solving the problem," he added.

The mayor said there is a need for everybody to sacrifice in the face of this crisis.
"From the family to the government, everyone should willingly share in the burden by doing what needs to be done to solve it," he added.

The mayor said there is a need for everybody to take stock of what they have.
"In our respective families, we need to know how much is our income because we need to base our expenses on this," he added.

The mayor noted that the reason why many families get into trouble financially is the wrong spending pattern.

"If you spend only what is within your income, you will not encounter problems like mounting debts," he noted.

The mayor said that while people have the right to a better life, this should be in the context of responsible stewardship which is spending within their capacity.

"This does not give people the right to enjoy what they want even if this is beyond their ability and budget," he noted.
