Who's afraid of worst-case scenarios?

With the coming State of the Nation Address (SONA), is there a cause for alarm?

With all the worst-case scenarios being banded about, we have all the reasons to be alarmed and be afraid.

Why of all times, it would be during the SONA?

According to rabid Arroyo watchers, this is the time where the dreaded Con Ass will be convened. If so, then there goes the Gloria (Macapagal-Arroyo)of the Philippines-- ruling the country as long as she pleases, if not, forever.

To this BGlante, Con Ass is the lesser evil. What we are afraid up is the bigger evil which is emergency rule.

Either way, all of the above works to the advantage of GMA if she so desires to perpetuate herself in power. With Con Ass, this political animal is tailored-fit to change the form of government-from presidential to parliamentary. This suits GMA's diabolical plan to run for a Congress seat to qualify in running as prime minister.

What if the people will react violently? No problem, as far as GMA is concerned. This is the kind of chaotic environment she is hoping for. If there are chaos and anarchy in the streets, who can stop her from putting into order a violent situation. Most likely, she will say, in the interest of preserving law and order, "I hereby declare martial law". Tapos!

So, martial law is the answer.

Anyway, these are all speculations. But what if indeed she is bent on ruling with an iron-fist.

That's the end of a perfect day.

For one, this paper will be clamped down. Because, the first victims are the broadcast facilities (TV, radio) and circulation of the printed word. No radio, TV stations, no newspapers. So, everybody will cower in fear.

For as long as the emergency is in force, we are in a state of animation when will it end.

Will the people take it lying down? Will the military follow the chain of command?

At this point, it's too early to tell. But at least, we will be comforted with the fact that the reaction of the people and the military remains a question mark.
Not a fait accompli.
How the people react against emergency power is a big factor. With the living pattern like the two Edsas, it would not be hard to discern if push comes to shove, the danger of another people power could be a reasonable and compelling option.

For martial rule to succeed, the military component is a must. Without it, martial rule is nothing.

But another question is how politicalized is the military. Will it allow itself to be used as life support system of martial law?

.With all these worst-case scenarios, our contemplation is, God forbids!
